Buying guide

How to choose a jacket for riding a motorbike.

A riding jacket should block the wind, hold off drizzle, and stay comfortable for long rides. Here are six things to check before you buy.

1. Fabric that blocks the wind

On a motorbike the wind feels far stronger than when you walk. Tightly woven parachute fabric blocks it best.

2. Water resistance for drizzle

A water-resistant coating protects you from drizzle and road spray. Owncrave’s waterproof models are rated up to 80% water-resistant, enough for light rain. For long, heavy rain, still wear a raincoat.

3. Cuffs and hem you can tighten

Ribbed or velcro cuffs and hem toggles keep the wind out and stop the jacket ballooning while you ride.

4. A hood you can adjust or remove

A hood with toggles can be tightened when you stop outside. A detachable hood, like Malabar’s, stays out of the way when you wear a helmet.

5. Zip pockets

Zip pockets keep your phone, wallet, and keys secure on the road.

6. Size and sleeve length

With your hands on the handlebars, the sleeves pull back. Make sure they still cover your wrists. If you wear the jacket over a hoodie, go one size up.

Safety note. A casual jacket is not a replacement for armored protective gear. For long distances or high speeds, wear riding gear that meets safety standards.
